Day One

Clothes – check. Sports shoes – check. Mosquito repellent – check. Ready to drive off to KL Sentral to pick up the other Project Penyu volunteers! By noon, 3 cars were filled with all 15 volunteers and their luggages, ready for a 4 hour journey to Kerteh Terengganu. Our convoy stopped at the Genting Sempah R&R to have a quick lunch, fill up our gas tanks, and TnG cards. By 4.30 p.m., we finally reached @Ma’Daerah Turtle Sanctuary in Kerteh which will be our main activity spot, and our accommodation for 4 nights.

The first thing we did was, of course, to check out the beach! We then headed to Mesra Mall to get necessities for the volunteers as well as cleaning items. With these items, the volunteers cleaned the communal toilets, placed hand washes and toilet paper in them. We also had to sweep off all the sand from our dorm rooms!

Having had dinner, settled down, chose our beds, unpacked, and showered, the Ma’Daerah ranger, Abang Mat gave a briefing and presentation on turtles and about the sanctuary itself.

We then went for our first patrolling at about 10pm, and we were extremely fortunate to have a view of a female turtle laying eggs on our first night!

We continued patrolling the beach for a few hours, and went to our respective dorm rooms after a fairly exhausting seaside venture.
