“Never Give up” : How Patrick’s Liver Transplant and His Parents Unwavering Support Sparked a Lifelong Mission of Giving

Patrick’s story isn’t solely about survival, it embodies resilience, compassion, and a relentless drive to change the world to be a better place. Patrick’s early life was marked by overwhelming medical challenges that tested the strength of his parents. At just two months old, he was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare liver condition. As his condition worsened, doctors suspected something more, and genetic testing eventually revealed Alagille Syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by a spontaneous mutation. By mid-2019, his liver had reached end-stage failure, and he urgently needed a transplant to survive.

Patrick’s liver transplant journey was not a straightforward process. Unlike many who are placed on a waiting list for organ donation, this was considered a last resort for Patrick. In cases like his, doctors typically recommend seeking a donor from the immediate family—either the parents or extended relatives like cousins. If these options are medically unsuitable, then placement on the waiting list becomes necessary. Fortunately, Patrick’s father, Ket Sing, was identified as the most suitable donor.

They soon stumbled on another hurdle as Malaysia did not have the expertise to perform a liver transplant between an adult and a baby at that time, so the doctors at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) advised the family to go to Renji Hospital, the world’s leading liver transplant centre, located in Shanghai, China. The surgery was successful and was achieved with the help of an NGO who raised RM140,000 within 24 hours.

Ket Sing, Patrick’s father, is a health-conscious man who did extensive research and discussed with doctors ways to improve Patrick’s quality of life. When they realized a liver transplant would eventually be needed, Ket Sing read up on ways to prolong liver health in chronic liver diseases. With the consent of Patrick’s doctors, he added milk thistle and other supplements to Patrick’s medications, supported by medical research studies backing its use.

In Malaysia, the number of organ donors remains critically low which leaves some families in desperation, even resorting to public appeals for living liver donors. Ket Sing’s selfless act not only saved Patrick’s life but also underscored the transformative power of organ donation. Despite this significant role, Ket Sing continued to work and care for Patrick when Cordelia, Patrick’s mother, needed rest, becoming the family’s strongest support system. His resilience allowed Cordelia to stay home full-time to care for Patrick during his critical recovery period.

On 8 December 2024, Patrick and his mother, Cordelia Lee, joined Charisma Movement and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) volunteers at our healthcare-themed Kopi Chat titled Tiny Fighters, Mighty Hearts: Empowering Young Warriors Against Cancer. Alongside other volunteers, they visited UKM Specialist Children's Hospital where they distributed handmade sock dolls to young cancer patients. This act of generosity was not a one-off event for Patrick—it’s a tradition he started in 2019 during his routine checkups at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM). Over the years, these checkups became opportunities for Patrick to bring joy to other children who, like him, were navigating the daunting world of medical treatments.

“I just want to make other kids happy,” Patrick shared with a shy but earnest smile.

These sock dolls, lovingly made by Cordelia, serve beyond a decorative purpose. To the children who received them, they are symbols of comfort and optimism. Each distributed doll represents Patrick's effort to bring about kindness, a belief instilled in him by his mother. These dolls also aim to uplift the mental health of children battling illnesses, children who endure intense physical pain and suffering often experience unhappiness or depression. They have  become a source of comfort, a safe space during intimidating medical treatments, and a positive outlet to express their emotions.

Patrick’s act of donating is a message of hope to families navigating the journey of liver transplants. By sharing Patrick’s resilience and strength, Cordelia aims to show that there is a brighter future after an organ transplant.

“Through these dolls, we want to demonstrate to other families that there is hope, that their children can lead happy and fulfilling lives despite the hardships,” she shared.

Beyond the dolls, Cordelia’s steadfast and unwavering support has been the backbone of Patrick’s strength. When Patrick was at his lowest point, Cordelia did not let despair swallow their household. Instead, she found creative ways to lift their spirits. She wrote a song titled ‘Cordi Li's Little Fighters’ with cheerful melodies that brought light into their challenging days. The song can be found on Spotify under Cordi Li, Cordelia Lee's performer name.

Music became an instrument to help him remember his inner power. One song, in particular, became a family anthem, embodying their collective determination to overcome adversity. In addition to music, Cordelia instilled in Patrick the faith that resilience is the path to success, even in the face of adversity.

The phrase ‘Never Give Up’ means more than just a slogan to this mother-son duo. It is a guiding light, etched into their hearts. At each event they go to, they bring a banner featuring that slogan and it serves as a reminder of their journey to recovery and a beacon of hope for others.

“It’s not just about us,” Cordelia said. “The idea is to demonstrate to others that no matter how cruel life can be, there is always hope.”

Patrick’s acts of kindness extend beyond his hospital visits. Through donating sock dolls, Patrick and his mother also advocate for higher awareness on organ donation. Cordelia also advocates for greater awareness about organ donation, hoping to inspire more individuals to pledge as donors.

“Organ donation can transform lives. By showcasing Patrick’s story and his ‘never give up’ spirit, we aim to highlight the positive impact of transplants and encourage others to step forward as organ donors,” she explained.

Patrick's life, though troubled, is a living campaign for resilience. In spite of his medical problems, he will not allow them to own him. His days are filled with joy, playfulness, and an infectious energy that lights up any room he enters. Whether he’s dressing up as Spider-Man to deliver dolls or striking playful poses for the camera, Patrick exudes a zest for life that inspires everyone around him.

This energy is also reflected in his extracurricular interests. Patrick has an intense interest in running, which he started as a way of regaining strength amid recovery but it has since morphed into a true hobby. Running has taught him discipline and endurance—qualities that mirror his journey through life. “Every step is like a reminder of how far I’ve come,” Patrick said.

Cordelia’s unwavering dedication to her son’s well-being goes beyond the ordinary and has transformed their challenges into opportunities for growth and kindness, shaping Patrick into the remarkable child he is today. From crafting sock dolls to songwriting to encouraging the "Never Give Up" attitude, Cordelia has made sure that Patrick's life is not dictated by his medical background but by the contribution he makes.

For Cordelia, the goal is simple yet profound. “This transplant provided Patrick with the opportunity to live," she said. “We want to make that life meaningful—not just for him, but for everyone he touches.

Patrick's story, from being a vulnerable baby to a strong boy who brings happiness to others, is extraordinary. It is a story of overcoming the odds, finding purpose in adversity, and using one’s second chance at life to uplift others.

Patrick’s journey is a testament to the strength of family, resilience, and the life-changing power of organ donation. Together, the Kon family continues to inspire others, one act of kindness at a time.
